REHABILITATION TECHNOLOGY

Demand for rehabilitation services is growing apace with population aging. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), senior citizens 65 years or more will increase 88% in the coming years. Stroke is the primary cause of disability in aging population, and the second leading cause of death in many countries.

Although the mortality rate of stroke has declined, the incidence and prevalence of stroke continue to rise, meaning an ever growing number of elders with conditions that require rehab services for their recovery.

In addition, shoulder injuries are one of the most frequent pathologies in primary care, and in many cases require workers to take sick leave or to lose their full working capacity or jobs. Research on rehabilitation technologies aiming to serve elderly and physically disabled individuals in their daily life is expanding accordingly.

Rehabilitation Robotics is a new medical technology aimed at the restoration and functional compensation of people suffering from physical disabilities, either for therapy purposes or assistance of patients. Within this field, robotic exoskeletons are an increasingly important tool for therapists.
