Diagnosis of Neurodevelopmental disorders

Neurodevelopmental disorders are a heterogeneous group of conditions that are featured by abnormal development of brain functions. They are defined by clinical criteria and they are normally diagnosed by clinical interview and reports from teachers and parents. These disorders significantly disrupt normal life and affects adult life of those children who suffered them.

We are particularly interested in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism and intellectual disability. These disorders share common needs that could be solved with the development of valid functional biomarkers:

1. Early diagnosis that allows early intervention. Although diagnosis at late ages is usually straightforward, it is much more difficult at early ages (less than 6 years old).

2. Objective assessment of severity by functional evaluation of dysfunctional brain systems. This will also be important for producing a more accurate long-term prognosis and for accelerating evaluation of potential interventions for these disorders.

3. Monitoring of treatments providing information valid to decide whether a treatment is useful for a particular patient or if a higher dose of a particular drug is required.

4. Customization of treatments, tailoring them for particular patients from the increasing number of pharmacological and non-pharmacological efficacious interventions available.

We believe that eye movement measurement in combination with other biomarkers has the potential to solve these problems.
